A couple of nights ago there was once again an entirely unexpected and unpredicted volcanic eruption in Chile. As some of you may recall this happened early last month at Volcán Villarica. This time it was Volcán Calbuco. These two eruptions combined with the 2008 Chaiten eruption also in Chile beg the question of how safe human beings are living next to volcanoes that are not being constantly monitored. Quite fortunately, these three eruptions caused no direct casualties. When will such a scenario get a lot of people killed? This footage is short and annoyingly shaky and short-lived after the plinian eruption is revealed but it is nonetheless powerful footage and utterly fascinating.
