I encountered this odd scene last week in my alleyway as I was leaving to take my dog on a short walk. You are looking at two Southern Alligator Lizards. I'm not sure if this is a mating situation or two males determining pecking order. The gray one had the brown one in his mouth but the brown one didn't seem too disturbed whereas the brown one could have bitten the gray one but did not which leads me to suspect the gray one is male and the brown one female and guess what the male one wants? I would guess that your summation is correct, given that the tail of the brown one is a regrow. Of course, you know that these guys have two "joneses," right?
