This was the apocalyptic scene a couple of nights ago in Ruidoso, New Mexico. The structures at left are part of the high school there as yet another unseasonably early raging wildfire scorches yet another part of the United States this March. The Moon Mountain Fire has scorched 125 acres and is 60% contained. The multi-decadal drought in the Southwest continues to bring early fire to New Mexico in what is now becoming a new normal. Elsewhere, a 367,620 acre wildfire has recently burned in both Kansas and Oklahoma with the Kansas part being the largest wildfire ever recorded in that state. Given the area of fire danger is moving north and it is still only March, this portends a terrible fire season across North America in 2016. Photo courtesy of John Daniel (all rights reserved). |
