Erin's Song

The Erin mentioned in my previous post on this blog starting in 2005 almost immediately became my best female friend that year or ever and remains so to this day. I regret that I don't see her enough given how life has taken us out of as close an orbit to each other as was the case in the mid-2000's. Anywho, I won't violate her privacy by getting into any specifics about her life other than to say that the following Depeche Mode track "Precious" from their 2005 album "Playing The Angel" is to my heart and mind Erin's theme song. I cannot hear it or think of it without thinking of her personality and her life story given the lyrics which I have included below the music player immediately below here. The song was a huge hit at the time it came out in late 2005 into 2006. She even went to see Depeche Mode in concert in Los Angeles when they were touring during this song's peak of popularity. "Precious" was penned by Depeche Mode singer-songwriter and founding member Martin Gore and refers to his children's experience as he and their mother, lingerie designer and model Suzanne Boisvert-Gore, divorced. However, the song is open to personal interpretation as the band prefers for all their songs and I interpret it as bittersweetly being about Erin's journey.

Precious and fragile things
Need special handling
My God what have we done to you
We always tried to share
The tenderest of care
Now look what we have put you through

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

Angels with silver wings
Shouldn't know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for you
If God has a master plan
That only He understands
I hope it's your eyes He's seeing through

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

I pray you learn to trust
Have faith in both of us
And keep room in your hearts for two

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give
