Picture of the Day - Marlyn Moonroe
Today I felt lost with what's happening in my family and needed to reboot my mind by leaving town and heading south to San Luis Obispo for a couple of hours. I had my breakfast/lunch/dinner combo in the form of the sampler plate at Mo's Barbecue Steakhouse, my first such visit. I also visited BooBoo Records and Phoenix Books, although I purchased nothing. On my walk back to my car as I passed along the south side of the SLO REP, I espied one of the Cow Parade cow statues on permanent display. I do not recall seeing this one before which made it an added treat. As some of you may or may not recall, I worked both the public display event for the Cow Parade at the Madonna Inn in September, 2016, and the private auction of the cow statues at Oyster Ridge Barn outside Santa Margarita.

Picture of the Day - Eyewitness To Rich At Rest
Local magician/mentalist Rich Ferguson whom I previously mentioned HERE and who was in attendance to entertain at last night's San Luis Obispo High School Grad Night event at Mountainbrook Church in San Luis Obispo, CA, wanted me to capture for evidence and share this grainy image (much like a typical UFO or Big Foot image) of him actually relaxing and enjoying himself and not working for work, but rather working for fun. Grainy iPhone 4 image by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved.... and just remember that Google Images!).

Picture of the Day - Rich Tricks Kids
Tonight while working the San Luis Obispo High School Grad Night event at Mountainbrook Church in San Luis Obispo, CA, I encountered a familiar face from my high school daze, er days, to wit, Rich Ferguson who has made quite a name for himself as a magician and mentalist and is nationally/internationally acclaimed. Rich being the kind of stand-up guy he is (literally and figuratively), once again this year entertained Tiger teens in their last night of childhood and put on his usual amazing show. Notice in this image the thrall in which he holds these otherwise hip, slick, and cool teens. See more of Rich tonight HERE. Photo by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved).
Picture of the Day - Night-Zorbing
Tonight I worked the annual San Luis Obispo High School Grad Night event held at Mountainbrook Church in San Luis Obispo, CA. The event is awesome for the kids and adult volunteers alike and went smooth as silk this year. It was nice for me to be back working it after missing it last year due to suffering from Whooping Cough at the time and having finals at Cal Poly to study for. Picture of the Day - Busy Cal Poly Sunset Scene
I captured this image with my iPhone4 at the bus stop next to Kennedy Library on the campus of Cal Poly early this evening. This image has a lot going on in it. The cumulus clouds presage an approaching storm. The light fixture features the mission bell design. The radio tower for KCPR, the campus radio station is visible just to the left of center and to the right of it is iconic Bishop Peak. At left is Kennedy Library and at right is Bonderson Engineering Project Center. The road at center is North Perimeter. The light to the right of the road is flashing overheard lights to a Cal Poly PD unit parked at the aforementioned building for some emergency. The headlights on the road are those of my approaching RTA 9Express bus I take home after class on Wednesdays this quarter. Photo by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved).

Pepper Tree Ranch in Four Frames
This afternoon into this evening, my brother-by-another-mother, Mike, and I worked a wedding at Pepper Tree Ranch in the Edna district of unincorporated San Luis Obispo, CA. As you might recall HERE we first worked here last summer and it made quite an impression upon us. Since that time owner Darren has made more improvements to the facility.
Since last July, Darren completed building this pond and the wedding ceremony structure seen above.
Darren is incredibly gifted in metal work and finding ways to incorporate metal work into various elements of the property including this new water fountain adjacent to the new pond.
Above shows more of the iron work structures in the new pond inclusion. Also visible are the new couple getting photographed on a rock after the ceremony but before dinner as the sun set.
This highlight of this venue/property is the tree house pictured above. All photos by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved).

They're So Adorable!
Today during my History 424 class at Cal Poly we were interrupted by a tumult outside and paused class long enough to step outside and investigate. To our surprise we observed this overwrought demonstration of youthful, self-important, self-indulgent, ("hey, look at me, look at me") melodrama tinged with the contemporary campus political correctness and Millennial Safe Space mentality.
I guess he's not your President if you don't agree with him and on a university campus you have a right to not have your safe space violated.
You crazy kids are really sticking it to the man.

"Fill-in-the-Blank" Lives Matter has become so de rigueur and dreadfully passé.

Picture of the Day - Rainbow Over Bishop Peak
This morning when I arrived at 8 a.m. for classes at Cal Poly starting at 10 a.m. I was greeted with this beautiful scene of a rainbow embedded within a stormy sky looming over locally iconic Bishop Peak and the adjacent city of San Luis Obispo. Photo by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved)

Picture of the Day - Cuesta Grade Stratus Blanket
This was the sight I beheld as I descended the Cuesta Grade into San Luis Obispo this morning en route to Cal Poly classes starting at 8 a.m. This stratus cloud bank blanket burned off by noon. Photo by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved) |

SLO Hottest In USA
Today, the current heatwave driven by autumnal, not vernal atmospheric conditions, pushed the mercury in San Luis Obispo, CA, up to 108° F, making it the hottest weather reporting location in the United States (Death Valley, CA, also reached 108° F today), and the 19th hottest location on Earth for this day.
Quite fortunately for me, I did not have to be in SLO today as I am at my high school on Tuesdays and Thursday and at Cal Poly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays this quarter. However, being in Atascadero, I was not spared some measure of summer-like heat as the mercury nearly reached the century mark falling one degree shy.

Picture of the Day - Red Flag Warned
I captured this image yesterday while working the Cow Parade at Madonna Inn. Today I worked a six-hour shift up the hill on the same property conducting parking at the Home Expo being held a second day at the Event Center. The same red flags were today where you see them in this image from yesterday. And they were blowing just the same, except this time from a full-fledged Santa Ana Wind event whereas yesterday when this image was taken, the Santa Ana Wind event was still setting up. Today in this field it hit about 95° F which is unusually hot for this valley whose climate is dominated by marine air most of the time, year-round. The flag color seemed fitting given the Red Flag Warnings not too far southeast of here and the raging Canyon Fire burning a county away today to the south on the post of Vandenberg Air Force Base. In fact, the top of the smoke bank coming off this fire was visible over the hills to the south. Photo by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved). |

Picture of the Day - Cow Parade
Today I worked an eight-hour parking shift in the field at Madonna Inn which was hosting the one-day-only Cow Parade event. The organizers expected abouit 2,500 guests when, in fact, about 10,000 showed up. This coincided with a Home Expo up the hill on the same property at the Event Center here. The resulting traffic nightmare was a veritable Car-Mageddon with bumper-to-bumper traffic snaking back from Madonna Road to the Event Center and into our parking lot nearly paralyzing it. Traffic coming in backed out onto the 101 Freeway at times. We held our ground and made it work despite that and the heat we endured. Photo by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved). |

Picture of the Day - Dana & Ish
The wedding I worked tonight at Meadowbrook Church in San Luis Obispo was my favorite event worked thus far in my nearly three-year career in the event industry. I sat much of the time at the DJ's table with DJ Dana McGregor and his brother by another mother, Ish, who assisted him with sound and collaborated with him on his new book (for that check the website linked below). Anywho, both men are amazing people and I was blessed to be pulled into their safe and sane insanity and zanity. The image above shows the climax of the evening with the wedding Dana at riding a shoulder at left faced off against Ish riding a shoulder at right. Interestingly, Dana is the surfing goat guy who recently appeared on NatGeo. His website is SurfingGoats.com at which you can see his videos including the NatGeo piece. I highly recommend Dana as a DJ, but be warned: he won't be DJ-ing your party; he will BE your party! Photo courtesy of Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved). |

Clearly none of them were engineering majors. |
The university administration weighed in on this to the student body with the following communique:
To the campus community,
Early this morning, we were made aware of a large student party in the neighborhoods to the south of campus that resulted in the collapse of a garage roof due to multiple individuals on the roof. As many as 10 individuals suffered injuries in the collapse, none of them life-threatening. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we are grateful to the first responders. We are also fortunate that the outcome was not worse.
This event raises significant concern about the judgment exercised by both the party organizers and attendees regarding the health and safety of themselves and others. Behavior like this has no place in San Luis Obispo and is counter to the expectation we have of Cal Poly students.
The university will investigate all aspects of this incident and will respond appropriately when the facts are known.
The Cal Poly community was fortunate this morning that the outcome was not life-threatening. We have a great concern for the health and wellbeing of our students, which means we must continue to work to make sure events like this do not occur in the future.
We will provide updates as we learn more about this incident.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey D. Armstrong Keith B. Humphrey

Picture of the Day - Winter Sunset In Front Of PAC
As I left the Cal Poly campus today the amazing sunset I had already been watching as I walked through campus finally afforded me a view worthy of an image posted on this blog. While cluttered by human-made objects it was at least worthy of a picture being captured due to the artistic aspect of the Performing Arts Center and the spherical sculpture located in front of it. Picture of the Day - Pacific Storm Approach
This was the view from atop Building Five (Architecture & Environmental Design) on the Cal Poly Campus right before my last final of the just-ending quarter this afternoon. This is the massive Pacific Storm of 12/11/14 approaching the Central Coast of California. Locally-iconic Bishop Peak is visible at right. Photo by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved). |

The Joy Of Stairs
This is not the first time I have posted pics of Building Five (Architecture & Environmental Design) at Cal Poly. I love this building: it is so quirky and unusual and laid out like a structure in a fantasy game milieu. One of the charming features of this 4-5 story building (depending upon which part of it you refer) are the numerous angles of stairs and cool stairwells and concrete catwalks and balconies and intentionally exposed ducts and other lifelines.
This is actually a rebar and pipe sculpture. Photos by Kim Patrick Noyes (all rights reserved). |
Stormy Cal Poly In Three Pix
Today was stormy and for the second time this quarter at Cal Poly there were puddles of water to be found on-campus. This was the view today from the roof of Building Five (Architecture & Environmental Design) looking eastward into Reservoir Canyon. |
The clock bell on the north end of Building Two (Education Building) was ringing as I shot this image with the backdrop of an El Niño-looking sky that threatened to rain here but ended up raining in the North County instead. |
